The medical abbreviation HD stands for Hemodialysis. It refers to a medical procedure wherein a machine is used to filter excess waste products, extra fluid, and toxins from the blood when the kidneys are not functioning at the optimal level or have lost most or all of their functionality because of chronic kidney disease or acute renal failure. The machine acts as an artificial kidney to cleanse the blood.
