Certified Medical Assistant Salary: Hourly Wage & Regional Data

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly wage for certified medical assistants was $18.04 in May 2020. The lowest 10% earned less than $13.30, and the highest 10% earned more than $23.81.

Certified medical assistants earn more in certain areas of the country and in certain settings. For example, certified medical assistants in California earned a median hourly wage of $21.16 in May 2020, while those in Texas earned a median hourly wage of $16.28. Certified medical assistants who worked in hospitals earned a median hourly wage of $19.51, while those who worked in outpatient care centers earned a median hourly wage of $17.58.

The demand for certified medical assistants is expected to grow over the next few years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of certified medical assistants will grow by 19% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is expected to be driven by the increasing demand for medical services, as well as the need to replace retiring workers.
