Medical Coder & Biller: Job Duties, Responsibilities & Skills
Medical Coding
* Review patient medical records to identify diagnoses and procedures performed
* Assign appropriate codes to diagnoses and procedures according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)
* Ensure that codes are accurate, complete, and consistent
* Submit coded data to insurance companies and other payers
Medical Billing
* Prepare and submit medical bills to insurance companies and other payers
* Follow up on unpaid claims
* Handle patient inquiries about billing
* Work with insurance companies to resolve disputes
Additional Duties
* Stay up-to-date on changes to coding and billing regulations
* Maintain a strong understanding of medical terminology
* Communicate effectively with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
* Work independently and as part of a team
* Be able to handle stress and work under pressure
