Post-Due Date: When to Seek Medical Attention & Understanding Labor Progress
It is generally recommended that you contact your healthcare provider if you have reached 42 weeks of pregnancy. Your doctor will likely schedule an induction of labor or a cesarean section if you have not delivered by this time.
During your doctor's visit, they will assess your dilation, effacement, and station. Dilation refers to the opening of the cervix, and effacement refers to the thinning of the cervix. The station refers to the position of the baby's head in relation to the pelvis. Your doctor will also assess your baby's heart rate and movement.
If you have any of the following symptoms, you should go to the hospital immediately:
* Regular contractions that are increasing in intensity and frequency
* A bloody show or a gush of fluid
* Severe abdominal pain
* Severe headaches or dizziness
* Vision changes
* Swelling of your hands or face
* Feeling faint or lightheaded
