Average Hospice Patient Load: A Comprehensive Overview
According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), the average hospice in the United States serves about 100 patients at any given time. However, the size of hospices can vary significantly, with some small hospices serving only a few dozen patients, while some large hospices may serve several hundred patients.
The NHPCO estimates that there are more than 5,400 hospices in the United States, serving a total of about 1.6 million patients each year. The vast majority of hospice patients are in their last months or weeks of life and are being cared for at home.
