Origins of Emo: Tracing the Subculture's Roots

The concept of "emo" as a subculture and music genre emerged in the mid-1980s in the hardcore punk scene in Washington, D.C. It later developed into several genres and subcultures such as emo pop, screamo, and post-hardcore. It's not appropriate to pinpoint a single individual as the "first emo person" since the culture grew organically from a collective movement within the D.C. Hardcore scene.
