How to Write Physician Goals
Physicians provide medical interventions to treat illness and disease. They develop treatment plans to establish a course of care and the interventions that they will use in the process. These interventions are associated with specific goals that will determine whether a treatment was successful or not. Goals also help determine which treatments are medically necessary to be considered for coverage by health insurance companies. In addition to patient-focused goals, physicians also establish professional goals and goals for their medical practice as a facility.
Instructions
Establish goals for treatment with input from the patient. Goals must be objective and measurable, with a specific time-frame for achievement. Document these goals in the patient's chart and review his progress at follow-up visits. Certain insurance companies might require you to document these goals using a specific form, along with justification for why the intervention is medically necessary.
Establish professional goals to advance in your career. Write down areas of interest and research continuing education courses to further your knowledge and improve patient care. Base your goal on the number of CEUs -- continuing education units -- you need to obtain annually to keep your license current.
Write down short and long-term goals for your facility. Set benchmark goals for recruiting new patients. Distribute a patient satisfaction survey and write goals specific to the areas that need improvement. Set revenue goals and write objectives for staff to follow to achieve these goals.
