HIPAA Training: Protecting Patient Information & Avoiding Penalties
Anybody who provides patient care or patient referrals is subject to the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act. This federal law provides standards on keeping patient information private. Stiff penalties are imposed on those who violate this law. Training is a requirement for employees who work in the health care industry. This training ensures that patient information is kept confidential and secure as required by law.
Instructions
Create an outline for the training session so that all areas are sure to be included as required. HIPAA law is detailed and the training can only be completed if every aspect is covered. These materials need to include policies that HIPAA requires for all health care workers as well as the policies set forth by your company regarding these rules and regulations. A HIPAA specialist or trainer should review any training materials that are being used to ensure that the information is accurate and up to date.
Hold a HIPAA training class for all employees who are effected by these regulations. The training class should be at least two hours. This will allow enough time so that all attendees have time to absorb the materials and ask questions during and after the training class.
Follow the outline that has been created to cover all the necessary material during the training session. Useful information, such as the history of HIPAA, the law in its current form and how it effects the facility at which it is being taught, are essential. Explain the consequences of disclosing protected information.
