How to Register for Medicare Safety Net
The Medicare Safety Net is a service from the Australian government providing its citizens with financial assistance for high out-of-pocket, out-of-hospital Medicare services. Registering for the Medicare Safety Net is only necessary for couples or families and can be completed online, over the telephone or at a Medicare office.
Instructions
Go to the Medicare Safety Net online registration site and complete the form. You will need to enter Medicare numbers for both you and your partner as well as details of your dependent children. If you have more than six dependent children you will not be able to register online.
Call 132 011 (within Australia) and speak to a Medicare representative about registering for the safety net. They will provide you with registration information about the safety net, its features and how to register. The call will be charged at the standard rate.
Visit a local Medicare office and ask about registering for the Medicare Safety Net. See Resources for a website providing details of all Medicare offices across Australia. You will be able to obtain application forms and information regarding the precise details of the safety net at the Medicare office.
