Pregnancy Medicaid: Eligibility & Application Guide
Medicaid is a government-operated insurance program designed to assist low-income families with children. Because a pregnant woman is technically "with child," she can also apply for the Medicaid program. In order to apply for pregnancy medicaid, your income must be below a certain threshold. This threshold will vary by geographical location.
Instructions
Visit your local Department of Human Services. Even though Medicaid is a federal program, it is administered on a state-to-state basis. The exact name of this agency may slightly vary by location. The address and contact information for your local Medicaid office can be found on your state's website (see Resources).
Advise the agency representative that you are pregnant and would like to apply for Medicaid coverage. As a general guideline, your income must be below poverty level. This level will be determined based on how many individuals are living in your home and how much income you have coming in.
Complete the Medicaid application. Some states allow you to download and print an application online from the state Medicaid website (see Resources).
Submit the completed application, along with documentation, to the agency representative. Examples of documentation you need are your birth certificate, paycheck stubs and bank statements to verify income.
Wait to receive your approval notice and Medicaid card in the mail. The exact amount of time it takes to receive your mail notification will vary by state.
