Autoclave Instrument Tray Testing: A Comprehensive Guide
Lab technicians use autoclaves to sterilize medical instruments. Instruments are laid out on trays that are then inserted into the autoclave, making fullest use of the space available in the device. After every 40 hours of use, the instrument trays should be tested to ensure that the autoclave is working efficiently. This testing also ensures that the instruments are being sterilized thoroughly.Things You'll Need
- 5 test indicator vials containing bacterial spores
- Compound microscope
Instructions
Uncap the five test indicator vials.
Remove the center tray in the autoclave. Place one vial in the center, another in the front, another in the back and one on the right- and left-hand sides of the tray.
Place the tray back into the autoclave and run the device.
Remove the tray and vials once the autoclave has finished its cycle.
View the contents of the five vials individually using a compound microscope to ensure that the bacteria have been killed.
