Understanding NANDA Nursing Diagnoses: A Comprehensive Guide

NANDA is an acronym for North American Nursing Diagnosis Association. NANDA was founded in 1982 to develop and standardize nursing language, terminology and nursing diagnoses. NANDA terminology directly relates to the nursing process and is specific to those issues that nurses regularly address.

  Complete a nursing assessment. The assessment includes information taken directly from the patient, significant others, a physical assessment, labs, vital signs, other diagnostic tests and in consultation with other health care providers.

  Check the NANDA-approved nursing diagnosis list. Find one or several that fits your assessment.

  Write the diagnosis in the approved, standardized manner. An example of a NANDA diagnosis related to risk is, "Risk for Impaired Liver Function." Another example of a NANDA diagnosis is, "Pain, chronic."

  Re-assess the patient. The NANDA nursing diagnosis may either be resolved or changed as the condition of the patient changes.
