Understanding Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) Blood Tests: What They Reveal
The mean platelet volume (MPV) blood test measures the average size of your platelets. MPV generally accompanies a platelet count and other platelet tests such as bleeding time or platelet function analysis.-
Platelet Count
-
The platelet count measures the number of platelets present in a blood sample. Your bone marrow creates platelets, an important part of the clotting process.
Bleeding Time
-
The bleeding time test establishes how long it takes your blood to clot. However, the numerous disadvantages of bleeding times may outweigh their usefulness.
Platelet Function Analysis
-
A platelet function analysis test measures platelet aggregation (how well your platelet come together) and adhesion (how well your platelets stay together).
MPV
-
Bigger platelets indicate newer platelets; therefore an elevated MPV occurs when platelet production in your bone marrow increases. Abnormally high or low MPV results, when coupled with other abnormal results, may help identify a particular disease. To determine if your MPV falls within the norm, refer to the normal range listed with your test results (generally around 7.4-10.4 fL).
Warning
-
Use this information for reference only. Normal ranges for lab results can vary depending on the instrumentation and methods used and should always be discussed with your health care provider.
