Find Your NPI: A Comprehensive Guide for Healthcare Providers
An NPI, or "National Provider Identifier," is a code used to identify individual health care providers in the United States. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), National Provider Identifiers are used "to uniquely identify a health care provider in standard transactions, such as health care claims."Identifying your NPI, whether you are an individual health care provider or part of an organizational provider, is a simple process of searching the public NPI records database that the CMS provides online.
Instructions
Go to the NPI Registry Search page, which is run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (see Reference).
Click the "Search for an Individual Provider" or the "Search for an Organizational Provider" link at the bottom of the page, depending on which one you are searching for.
Fill out the information (name, street address, city and state, etc.) for the provider. Although only one field has to be filled out to perform a search, the more information you provide, the more accurate your search will be.
