Cardiac Rehabilitation Technologist: Career Outlook & Training

Cardiovascular technologists and technicians assist people who are recovering from heart attacks and heart disease. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job field in cardiac rehab is growing at a faster than average rate.

Time Frame

• According to the BLS, most cardiovascular technicians are required to attend a two-year program at a junior or community college and earn an associate degree in the field. However, many employers require professional certification as well.

Geography

• There were 34 programs accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals, or CAAHEP, in cardiovascular technology education in 2009, according to the BLS, along with 168 accredited programs in echocardiography or vascular sonography.

Training

• In many two-year programs, the first year is dedicated to core courses in heart studies, according to the BLS. Students then choose to specialize during the second year, specializing in areas that include noninvasive vascular technology or invasive cardiovascular technology.
