Understanding the NMC Code of Conduct for Midwives

The NMC Code of Conduct refers to a set of performance, ethics and conduct standards for midwives published by the Nursing &Midwifery Council. The NMC represents the nursing and midwifery regulator for Scotland, Wales, England, Northern Ireland and the Islands.

Purpose

• The NMC Code of Conduct "is about being professional, about being accountable, and about being able to justify your decisions," according to the NMC website.

Content

• The NMC Code of Conduct advises nurses and midwives to earn patients' trust by treating them with care and honesty while respecting their dignity. It also requires nurses and midwives to act lawfully, respect patient confidentiality, gain consent and maintain professional boundaries. Finally, the Code of Conduct requires nurses and midwives to collaborate with their colleagues, keep their skills up to date and keep clear records.

Considerations

• The NMC advises that midwives and nurses obtain professional indemnity insurance. Midwives and nurses must inform patients if they do not have professional indemnity insurance and are not covered by their employer's liability.
