The NMC Code of Conduct advises nurses and midwives to earn patients' trust by treating them with care and honesty while respecting their dignity. It also requires nurses and midwives to act lawfully, respect patient confidentiality, gain consent and maintain professional boundaries. Finally, the Code of Conduct requires nurses and midwives to collaborate with their colleagues, keep their skills up to date and keep clear records.

The NMC advises that midwives and nurses obtain professional indemnity insurance. Midwives and nurses must inform patients if they do not have professional indemnity insurance and are not covered by their employer's liability.
