Pepsin-Containing Foods: Understanding and Safety
Pepsin is an enzyme in the stomach that begins the breakdown of proteins. Pepsin is released as pepsinogen, then mixed with stomach acids. This chemical reaction creates pepsin, which grabs proteins, such as meat, and begins to separate their molecules. The protein is then passed to the intestines to finish the breakdown and distribution of minerals to the body.-
Raw food
-
Raw proteins contain a great deal of pepsin. Eating raw meat is extremely dangerous, but raw beans also contain pepsin. Never eat raw meat. Meat should be cooked thoroughly, to its recommended temperature, before consumption.
Vitamin Supplements
-
Pharmaceutical companies make supplements to provide enzymes. Combination enzyme supplements, as well as single enzyme supplements, are available.
Syrup of Pepsin
-
Some companies make pepsin in a syrup form. This product does not contain other enzymes, and is easier to swallow than pills.
