Understanding Perimenopause: Symptoms, Stages & What to Expect
Pre menopause, more commonly referred to as perimenopause, occurs when a woman's body begins preparing for menopause; it usually begins when a woman enters her 40s, although it can begin earlier and may last up to eight years.-
Irregular Periods
-
During perimenopause, periods may become irregular. Some women may have periods that are further apart or closer together, heavier or lighter, or simply skipped altogether.
Sleep Issues
-
When night sweats or hot flashes occur, some women may experience insomnia or sleep disturbances.
Hot Flashes
-
During perimenopause, many women experience hot flashes; the severity and frequency of hot flashes varies widely from woman to woman.
Sexual Dysfunction
-
During perimenopause, diminishing estrogen levels may cause the vagina to be less lubricated and elastic, leading to painful intercourse and, eventually, a reduced sex drive.
Other Symptoms
-
Hormonal changes during perimenopause may lead to bone loss, rising cholesterol levels, urinary incontinence and decreased fertility.
