How to Get IMPLANON Removed
Implanon is an estrogen-free birth control device that is implanted into the arm. It is good for a time period of three years from implantation, at which time it has to be removed. If the patient desires, a new Implanon device can be inserted at that time. Having the Implanon removed is a fairly easy process requiring an office visit with a trained professional. The implant is removed under local anesthesia.
Instructions
Removing Implanon
Schedule an appointment with your OB/Gyn or family doctor. Make sure to inform the scheduler that the purpose of the appointment is for Implanon removal, and indicate whether you will require implantation of a new device or not.
Prepare yourself before the appointment by taking a dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the area before the procedure, but the early use of a pain reliever will help once you leave the office. Do not take aspirin, however, since it thins the blood and can increase bleeding during the procedure.
Go to the Doctor's office and relax while the device is removed by a professional. The procedure to remove the Implanon involves an in-office, minor surgical procedure. Your provider will make a small incision in your skin where the Implanon device is and remove it.
