Leaving Home in the UK at 16: Legal Rights and Parental Consent
In the United Kingdom, individuals under the age of 18 are considered minors and cannot sign legal documents or make legally binding decisions. Therefore, they are not permitted to leave home without the consent or permission of their parents or legal guardians.
However, there are few exceptions to this general rule:
- If a young person is married, they are considered to be an adult in the eyes of the law and can leave home without their parent's consent.
- If a young person is in the armed forces, they are also considered to be adults and can leave home without their parents' consent.
In some cases, a young person may be able to apply to the courts for emancipation. This is a legal process that allows a minor to be legally considered an adult and gain the rights and responsibilities associated with adulthood. If emancipation is granted, a young person can then leave home without their parent's consent.
