Drunk Driving Statistics: Alcohol & Age (21+)
The percentage of people who drink and drive over the age of 21 varies depending on the location and the time period being studied. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2020, 31% of drivers involved in fatal crashes had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or higher. Of those drivers, 29% were over the age of 21.
A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that in 2019, 10.5% of adults aged 21 years or older reported binge drinking in the past 30 days. Of those who binge drank, 21.4% reported driving under the influence of alcohol in the past year.
These statistics show that a significant number of people over the age of 21 drink and drive. This behavior puts both the drivers and others on the road at risk of injury or death.
