Navigating Contact with an Abusive Ex: Should You Attend an Event?
In general, it is not recommended to attend an event where your abusive psychopath narcissist ex will be. This is because:- They may try to manipulate or control you. Abusive psychopath narcissists are often skilled at manipulation and control, and they may use this to try to get you to do what they want or to make you feel bad about yourself.
- They may trigger negative memories or emotions. Being in the same room as your abusive ex may bring back memories of the abuse you suffered, which can be very distressing.
- They may put you at risk of further abuse. If your abusive ex is still dangerous, attending an event where they will be could put you at risk of further abuse.
Sometimes it may be unavoidable to attend an event where your abusive ex is present. If you do find yourself in this situation, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself.
- Be prepared. Before you attend the event, take some time to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally. This may involve talking to a therapist, practicing self-care, and developing a safety plan.
- Set boundaries. When you are at the event, be sure to set boundaries with your abusive ex. This may involve avoiding contact with them, not talking to them, or leaving the event if they approach you.
- Seek support. If you feel overwhelmed or unsafe, reach out to a friend, family member, or therapist for support.
