Bed Waterproofing Solutions: Protecting Against Incontinence
Waterproofing a bed or other piece of furniture is often necessary when a patient suffers from urinary or bowel incontinence. Incontinence refers to a loss of control over urination or defecation. Many people and hospitals use underpads, sometimes called Chux, to waterproof beds.-
Features
-
Underpads are flat pads that have an absorbent layer and a waterproof layer. Underpads come in a variety of sizes and absorbencies. Some underpads are disposable, while others are designed to be washed and reused.
Function
-
Underpads protect beds and other surfaces from urine or fecal matter. Mattresses and furniture are often difficult to clean completely. Some underpads pull moisture away from the surface of the pad, allowing the patient to stay dry. This prevents skin irritation.
Alternatives
-
You can also waterproof a bed or other surface with a rubber pad, a vinyl tablecloth or a shower curtain liner, according to Medline Plus. Cover these surfaces with a flannel or cotton sheet for comfort and absorbency.
