How to Control Power to a Wheelchair Motor
As the operator of a power wheelchair, you have the ability to make adjustments that affect the performance of your mobility device. However, you should avoid making modifications that increase the risk of injury or void the manufacturer's warranty. Owners shouldn't disassemble wheelchairs, add or remove parts, or attempt to rebuild or replace electrical components. You can, however, perform routine maintenance and utilize the advanced features of the wheelchair to increase power to the motor.Things You'll Need
- Clean cloth
Instructions
Remove buildup and debris from the axles, cables and connectors by wiping down the components with a clean cloth. Buildup on the axles may hinder the performance of the wheels, causing the motor to work harder. Dirt and debris on cables and connector plugs may cause a loose connection, affecting the overall performance of the wheelchair.
Fully charge the battery. To optimize power to the motor, allow the battery to charge until the ammeter indicates a full charge.
Lower the power elevating seat, which includes a speed inhibit system. If the seat is raised more than 1 to 2 inches, the speed inhibit system reduces the speed of the mobility chair. This may make it seem like the motor isn't receiving a lot of power. To increase power to the motor, adjust the position of your seat with the power seat switch, which is located on the joystick of your wheelchair.
