Freud's 'Man is a Wolf': Understanding Human Nature
According to Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, man is, to other men, a wolf. This famous quote, "Homo homini lupus" in Latin, is from the Roman playwright Plautus and reflects Freud's pessimistic view of human nature. Freud believed that every individual has primitive, aggressive impulses and desires, which are often unconscious and beyond our control. These aggressive instincts can lead to conflicts and destructiveness, making human relationships inherently complex and fraught with tension. Freud's concept of human nature emphasizes the importance of understanding the unconscious mind and controlling these primitive drives in order to achieve a healthy and fulfilling coexistence with others.Men's Health - Related Articles
