A victim will lose consciousness after approximately 4–5 minutes and die after approximately 4–6 minutes if their breathing and blood circulation stop as their brain is damaged as a result of a lack of oxygen. However, people with certain medical conditions such as epilepsy can hold their breath and tolerate the lack of oxygen for longer.
