How to Handle a Scraped Knee
Scraped knees are common among people of all ages, particularly those practicing a sport such as rollerskating, dancing, wrestling or bike riding. Kneepads protect against scraped knees in most cases, but some prefer not to wear them for aesthetic or comfort reasons. Unless a scraped knee is very deep, bleeding heavily or looks infected, you can handle the minor injury at home with standard first aid supplies.Things You'll Need
- Soft washcloth
- Soap
- Tweezers
- Rubbing alcohol
- Gauze
- Adhesive bandage
Instructions
Wash your hands with soap and water before handling a scraped knee.
Wash the scrape for five minutes with cool running water.
Cleanse the area around the wound with soapy water and a washcloth.
Remove any remaining dirt in the scrape with tweezers dipped in rubbing alcohol.
Press a piece of gauze gently on the wound to stop bleeding. If bleeding persists, raise the leg above heart level to halt bleeding.
Cover the scrape with an adhesive bandage. Change the bandage daily to keep the injury dry and clean.
