Ingrown Toenail in Children: Causes, Symptoms & Home Treatment
When your child's toe appears red and hot, it is quite likely he has an ingrown toenail. This means that his toenail is growing into the skin and it can be very painful. Wearing shoes that are too tight can contribute to the occurrence of an ingrown toenail. Or your child may simply have toenails that grow in a downward direction. Either way, this is something easily treatable at home.Things You'll Need
- Warm water
- Gauze or cotton
- Tea tree oil
Instructions
Soak the foot in warm water for ten to fifteen minutes, three times per day.
Pat dry and apply tea tree oil to prevent infection.
Gently lift the nail and insert a small amount of rolled cotton or gauze underneath to allow the nail to grow up and over the skin.
Replace the gauze or cotton several times per day and encourage your child to go barefoot when possible. If shoes are necessary, wear sandals or other loose fitting shoes.
