Understanding School Health Personnel: Roles & Responsibilities
School health personnel includes all professional healthcare providers who work full time, part time or on a contract basis in a school setting. It also includes non-licensed individuals who provide direct healthcare services in schools under the supervision of licensed personnel, such as health assistants and student health aides.
School health professionals, as determined by the State, may include physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, health services administrators, clinical psychologists, social workers, licensed guidance counselors, dentists, dental hygienists, nutritionists/dietitians, podiatrists, chiropractors, licensed physical, occupational, and speech-language pathologists and/or audiologists, optometrists, athletic trainers, mental health providers, certified interpreters for the hearing impaired and other appropriately credentialed individuals.
