Home Remedy for a Child's Stomach Ache
Stomachaches are common in young children. A stomachache, however, may indicate a serious illness, so try to identify the cause of the pain before attempting a home remedy. Gastroenteritis, allergic reactions, lactose intolerance, constipation, gas, colds and appendicitis can all cause a stomachache.-
Rest
-
Rest can sometimes help alleviate a child's stomachache. Encourage your child to rest in bed or on the couch under some warm blankets. A favorite stuffed animal or toy may help him relax. Cuddling with your child also may help bring relief from a stomachache.
Liquids &Food
-
Drinking plenty of liquids can help relieve constipation, which is often a cause of stomachaches. Liquids also prevent dehydration, particularly if your child has a cold or the stomach flu. Avoid spicy or rich foods that can cause more stomach discomfort. If a stomachache is accompanied by vomiting, avoid solid foods. Peppermint tincture or tea can relax the stomach muscles and relieve pain.
Heat
-
A warm bath can help a child relax and ease his stomach pain. Or, for an older child, use the lowest setting on a heating pad. Flax seed pillows, available at many stores, can be heated in a microwave and placed on a child's stomach to ease the pain.
Massage
-
Try massaging your child's stomach to relieve pain brought on by gas. Move your hand in a clockwise, circular motion while maintaining gentle pressure.
Medications
-
Use medications with caution. Evaluate the cause of the pain before administering medication. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before administering medication to a very young child.
