Understanding Nosebleeds in Children: Causes, Symptoms & Home Care

A bloody nose can be scary to see or have, especially in children. Parents find themselves wondering what could be causing frequent bloody noses and whether the cause is serious or a part of growing up. Most bloody noses in children are from minor causes and can be treated at home.

Symptoms

• A bloody nose in a child is normally bright red blood running from one or both nostrils. The bleeding can be light or heavy with some clots.

Bunt Trauma

• A blow to the nose is the most common cause of a nosebleed in children. Boys are more susceptible because of the more physical nature of typical play.

Illness

• The lining of the nose can dry out during illness. Irritation from rubbing or from the use of tissues can cause bleeding.

Other Causes

• Some children push things into their noses and cause them to bleed. Small toys, peas and anything small enough to fit into a nostril can start blood flow..

Picking

• Picking at dried mucous can cause a nose bloody. Fingernails can scratch the lining of the nose or a child can push hard enough to abrade the lining.

More Severe Conditions

• Heavy bleeding or frequent nosebleeds for no reason at all need further investigation. The main cause of nosebleeds without injury is a blood condition, such as abnormal platelets or even a clotting disorder like hemophilia.
