How to Breed a Shichon
Shichon puppies, a cross between the Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise dogs, have gained in popularity. They make great family pets, due to their small stature and gentle temperament, and are ideal for people with allergies. Most Shichon dogs tend to inherit the non-shedding characteristic associated with their Bichon Frise bloodlines. Their long coats require regular grooming, however they shed very little. Their fur may vary from short and fuzzy to long and silky. The longer the fur, the more maintenance and grooming they will need.Things You'll Need
- Shih Tzu male stud
- Bichon Frise female dam
- Pen for breeding
- Whelping box
- Plastic sheets
- Newspapers
- Veterinarian
Instructions
Watch for the dam to go into heat. After she shows signs of heat for three days or so, place the stud into the breeding pen with her.
Leave the stud in the pen with the dam for up to two days to ensure that the breeding occurs.
Provide the dam with a healthy diet and veterinary care. Roughly 63 days after the breeding, she will be ready to deliver her pups.
Prepare the whelping box for the dam. Alternate the layers of plastic sheets and newspapers to keep the whelping box clean as the pups arrive.
Take the puppies to the veterinarian at 6 weeks of age to receive their first set of shots and de-worming.
