Understanding Baby Head Temperature: Why It Feels Warmer
Babies' heads are not naturally hotter than their bodies.
There are some possible reasons why a baby's head might feel hotter than their body:
- Babies' heads are proportionally larger than their bodies. The head can account for up to a quarter of a baby's total surface area. This means that a significant amount of body heat is lost through the head.
- Babies' heads are covered with thin hair or no hair at all. The lack of insulation means that head heat is more easily lost to the environment.
- Babies' circulatory systems are still developing. This can sometimes cause the head to feel cool to the touch, while the rest of the body feels warm.
Parents should always monitor their baby's temperature with a thermometer, rather than relying on touch.
