The umbilical cord should not have a foul smell. If it does, it could indicate an infection. An infected umbilical cord may appear red, swollen, and may discharge pus. Signs of infection also include fever, irritability, and poor feeding. If you notice any of these signs, please take your newborn to the doctor immediately.
