What causes thrush in newborns?
Thrush in newborns is caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans in the mouth and throat. This fungus is naturally present in the body in small amounts, but it can become a problem if it grows out of control.
Newborns can get thrush from their mothers during birth if the mother has vaginal yeast infection. They can also get it from contact with contaminated objects, such as pacifiers, bottles, or breast pumps.
Thrush is more common in newborns who have a weakened immune system, such as premature babies or those with certain medical conditions.
Symptoms of thrush in newborns include:
* White or yellow patches on the tongue, roof of the mouth, or inside of the cheeks
* Difficulty breastfeeding or bottle-feeding
* A rash around the mouth
* Fussiness or irritability
If you think your newborn may have thrush, it's important to see a doctor right away. The doctor can diagnose thrush and prescribe treatment. Treatment typically involves antifungal medication that can be taken by mouth or applied directly to the affected areas.
