Understanding Live Birth: Definition and Key Characteristics
Live birth:When a fetus (embryo or germ) is completely expelled or extracted from the mother’s womb with the fetus still alive and capable of breathing or exhibiting spontaneous movements of voluntary muscles, whether or not the placenta is attached; live birth thus results in a child ‘born alive’ (World Health Organization, 1995).
