Sickle Cell Trait Inheritance: Understanding Risk for Children
The inheritance pattern of sickle cell anemia follows a simple Mendelian pattern. People with sickle cell anemia inherit two copies of the sickle cell gene, one from each parent. People with sickle cell trait inherit one sickle cell gene and one normal gene.
Therefore, if the father has sickle cell trait and the mother does not, the children will have a 50% chance of inheriting the sickle cell trait from their father. If they inherit the sickle cell trait, they will be carriers of the condition, but they will not have sickle cell anemia unless they also inherit the sickle cell gene from their mother.
