Alcohol Exposure During Conception: Risks of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
It is possible that a child conceived while the father was drunk may be at an increased risk of certain developmental problems, including fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). FAS is a group of birth defects that can occur in a child whose mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy. The effects of alcohol on a developing fetus can range from mild to severe, and can include physical, mental, and behavioral problems.
The risk of FAS is higher if the father is heavily intoxicated at the time of conception, and if the mother continues to drink alcohol during pregnancy. However, even a single episode of heavy drinking can increase the risk of FAS.
If you are concerned that your child may have been exposed to alcohol during conception or pregnancy, it is important to talk to your doctor. They can assess your child's health and development, and recommend any necessary treatment or interventions.
