Understanding Newborn Reflexes: What Happens If a Baby Doesn't Cry at Birth?
Doctors do not have to slap a baby's butt if they do not cry when delivered. The practice of slapping a baby's behind to stimulate crying after delivery is a myth and is an outdated birthing practice.
A baby's cry is a sign that their lungs are functioning properly. If the baby is not crying, the doctor will typically rub the baby's back, suction their nose and mouth, and provide oxygen to stimulate breathing.
