Estimate Daily Calorie Burn: A Comprehensive Guide

Counting the number of calories you burn in any given day can be tricky. Your weight, the foods you eat and the amount of exercise all play a role. Since calories are invisible, you have to rely on what experts have said over the years: The more you move, the more you remove. Calories aren't solid and tangible. Therefore, any amount you burn is always an estimate.

Multiply your weight times 10 to determine you basal metabolic rate or BMR. Your BMR is the average number of calories you need to consume to function normally. For example: 155 lbs. X 10 = 1550

Write down the physical activity percentage you burn during the day. If you sit most of the day, your activity level is 20 percent. If you walk a bit and do routine chores, your activity level is 37 percent. If you're a constant mover, your level is 40 percent. And if you exercise regularly, you're at 50 percent.

      Do the math.

Multiply your BMR with the percentage activity level that best suits you. For example: 1550 X .40 = 620. This is the number of daily physical activity calories.

Add your BMR to your physical activity calories. For example: 1550 + 620 = 2170. This is the number of calories you burn in a day.

    • 5

Divide the number of calories you burn in a day by the number of minutes in a day. For example: 2170/1440 = 1.50. This is the estimated average of how many calories you burn in a minute.
