Decoding Canned Goods Dates: Understanding 'Best By' & Shelf Life
Determining the expiration date on canned goods can be tricky. Most manufacturers today use a "best by" date stamp as they are hesitant to use an "expiration date." The "best by" date is the recommended date for the best flavor and quality. It is suggested to use this date as the expiration date for safety and quality.
Instructions
Inspect the top and bottom of the can for text. This will be printed on the can itself and not the label.
Locate the phrase "Best by" in the text.
Find the date following the words "Best by." The date may also be located on the can with no text associated with it.
Interpret the date format used. Standard date format is MM/DD/YYYY, with or without slashes. Others may only list the month and year, such as 12-2008 or Dec/2008.
