Adipex vs. Adipex-P: Understanding the Difference & Uses

Phentermine is the generic name for Adipex or Adipex-P. Adipex-P is the brand name. Many refer to the drug as simply Adipex, however, it is the same medication as Adipex-P. According to the WebMD website, this drug is believed to suppress appetite and boost energy.

Purpose

• Adipex-P is a commonly prescribed appetite suppressant for individuals who are overweight and guided by a physician to lose weight to avoid health risks that result from obesity.

Taking Adipex-P

• According to WebMD, patients must take Adipex-P orally once a day prior to breakfast or the first meal of the day. WebMD also indicates that this is a short-term aid in the weight-loss process and is not to be taken for longer than a few weeks.

Dosage

• According to the RxList website, Adipex-P is generally prescribed in doses of 37.5 milligrams (mg) per tablet. However, not everyone is required to take a full dose. In some cases, patients may take only a half of a tablet.
