Understanding the Role of an Orthodontist: Services & Treatments
Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, prevent, and treat dental and facial irregularities. They use a variety of techniques to correct misaligned teeth, poor bites, and other jaw problems.
Some of the things an orthodontist may do include:
* Examine patients' teeth, jaws, and faces to diagnose problems
* Develop and implement treatment plans
* Fit and adjust braces, retainers, and other orthodontic appliances
* Monitor patients' progress and make adjustments to treatment plans as needed
* Perform surgeries, such as orthognathic surgery, to correct severe jaw problems
* Provide preventive care, such as fluoride treatments and sealants, to help patients avoid future problems
Orthodontists typically have at least eight years of postsecondary education, including four years of dental school and four years of orthodontic residency training. They must also be licensed by the state in which they practice.
