Gum Abscess: Why You Shouldn't Try to Pop It & What to Do
Never attempt to pop a gum abscess. Doing so can lead to serious complications, including:- Spreading the infection to the jaw, sinuses, or bloodstream.
- Causing damage to the surrounding tissue, including the teeth and nerves.
- Creating a hole in the gum tissue (known as a fistula), which can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause infection.
- Increased pain and swelling.
- Fever and chills.
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
- Nausea and vomiting.
If you think you have a gum abscess, it's essential to see a dentist right away. Treatment for a gum abscess typically involves draining the abscess, removing the infected tissue, and prescribing antibiotics to clear the infection.
