Lifespan of Teeth: Understanding Primary and Permanent Teeth
Humans typically develop two sets of teeth during their lifetime: primary (deciduous) teeth and permanent (secondary) teeth.
1. Primary Teeth (Deciduous Teeth):
- Number: 20 teeth
- Timeframe: These are the first set of teeth that appear in children's mouths, starting at around 6-12 months of age and are usually all in place by age 3.
2. Permanent Teeth (Secondary Teeth):
- Number: 32 teeth
- Timeframe: Permanent teeth begin to replace primary teeth around age 6 and the process of losing primary teeth and gaining permanent teeth continues until approximately age 21.
Therefore, a person typically has a total of 20 primary teeth and 32 permanent teeth, making a grand total of 52 teeth throughout their lifetime. Wisdom teeth (third molars) are not included in this count as they may or may not develop and vary from person to person.
