Dental Handpiece Lubrication: A Comprehensive Guide for Technicians
Dental technicians lubricate dental handpieces to keep moving parts and hinges free of rust and corrosion. The water-based lubricant provides a protective shield to prevent instruments from dulling over time, and extends the life of the expensive handpieces. This lubrication process, called "instrument milking," is mandatory before sterilizing instruments.Things You'll Need
- Water-soluble lubricant
- Wash basin
- Instrument tray
Instructions
Mix one part instrument lubricant with five parts of water in a clean sink or wash basin. Add the clean dental tools.
Soak the instruments in the solution for five minutes. Remove the instruments and place them on an instrument tray.
Do not wipe or rinse the excess coating of lubricant from the handpieces. The instruments are now ready for the sterilization process.
