Platelets: Understanding Their Role in Blood Clotting and Vessel Repair
Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are small, colorless blood cells that help stop bleeding by forming clots. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets stick to the damaged area and release chemicals that cause other platelets to stick together. This forms a plug that prevents blood from leaking out of the vessel.
In addition to helping to stop bleeding, platelets also help to repair damaged blood vessels. They release chemicals that stimulate the growth of new cells that line the blood vessel walls.
Platelets are produced in the bone marrow and have a lifespan of about 10 days. They are constantly being replaced by new platelets that are released into the bloodstream.
