DIY Soap Making: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
### Supplies
* 6 cups lard or tallow
* 4 cups water
* 1 cup lye
* 1/2 cup borax
* 1 tablespoon salt
* Essential oils (optional)
Instructions
1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, bring the lard or tallow and water to a boil.
2. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
3. In a separate bowl, dissolve the lye in 1 cup of water.
4. Add the lye solution to the lard or tallow mixture and stir until combined.
5. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, or until it has thickened and turned opaque.
6. Add the borax, salt, and essential oils (if desired) and stir until combined.
7. Pour the soap mixture into a mold and let it sit for 24 hours.
8. Cut the soap into bars and let it cure for 4-6 weeks before using.
Tips
* To make a Castile soap, omit the lard or tallow and use all olive oil.
* For a more moisturizing soap, add 1/4 cup of glycerin to the soap mixture.
* For a more gentle soap, add 1/4 cup of oatmeal to the soap mixture.
* To make a liquid soap, add 1 cup of water to the soap mixture and stir until combined.
* Store the soap in a cool, dry place.
