How to Treat Pericoronitis
Pericoronitis is a dental disorder that mostly occurs among adults when a partially erupted wisdom tooth creates a cavity where bacteria can hide and cause infection in the gums. It's important to treat pericoronitis right away to stop the infection from spreading to the cheeks and neck.Things You'll Need
- Toothbrush
- Disinfectant mouthwash
- Aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Instructions
Look for symptoms, which include swelling and pain around the wisdom tooth and difficulty in opening the mouth.
Go to your dentist immediately if your jaws and cheeks are swollen. If the swelling is only around the wisdom tooth, you may be able to solve the problem on your own.
Rinse your mouth with warm salty water after every meal to prevent formation of bacteria.
Brush your teeth and wash your mouth carefully, making sure that all food particles are washed out.
Use a gentle disinfectant mouthwash after brushing your teeth.
Take pain relievers such as aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if necessary.
Contact your dentist if the problem persists. A case of severe infection may require oral surgery.
