DEXA Scan: What It Measures, Benefits & What to Expect
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is a type of bone density test that measures bone mineral density (BMD). BMD is the amount of minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus, in your bones. DEXA scans are used to diagnose and monitor osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle.
DEXA scans can also measure the amount of body fat and muscle mass. This information can be useful for weight loss and fitness programs.
DEXA scans are safe and painless. They are performed by a trained technician using a special machine. The scan takes about 10-15 minutes and you will be asked to lie still on a table while the machine moves over your body.
DEXA scans are an important tool for assessing bone health and managing osteoporosis. If you are at risk for osteoporosis, your doctor may recommend that you have a DEXA scan.
